What is deer calling?
Calling is an effective technique for hunting. Hunters use game calls to replicate the sound of the animal that they wish to hunt. By this way, they attract the animal for hunting. It will become easier to hunt if the hunter understands the sounds and calls that match. It depends on the season how to make the call.
For instance, hunters are advised to use soft calls in the post-rut season. In the rut season, using a rattle bag is a good technique. Using rattle bag early season or post-rut, younger bucks can get scared and run away so don’t use this sound in this season. In the pre-rut season and peak rut season, it is great if hunters use aggressive calls. Louder calls will attract those deer that are looking for the mating first time or have lost their mate. When you are deer calling early in the season, it is better to use weak bleat and grunt calls. Always remember that following a good strategy is key for successful hunting.
Doe Bleat and Grunt
It is the most effective sound that you can make during pre-rut to post-rut. It is because bucks seek to breed with does. It would be great if you will practice at home before using it at the location.
It is a perfect sound to make no matter what the season is. It is like playing with the emotions of a doe. When making the sound of a lost fawn, it will bring any doe to investigate. In the late pre-rut to and late post-rut, it will not work. Another method to use fawn bleat is to make this sound in a distressing way. It can be done by quietly before starting to make a louder call. The lungs of a fawn are smaller so make sure to keep your breaths short. However, the hunters don’t what it will attract a buck, doe or a local predator.
It is an aggressive call to do when grunts are getting avoided. Like the fawn bleat, this can also be used in all season. It is more likely that bucks will be attracted more than does.
Rattling seems like the sound of two deer fighting with each other. This is another call that can be made in the late and all other seasons.

In the late season, deer usually spend time in finding food rather than chasing doe because. Most of the doe already are bred before the late season. If there are mature does that didn’t breed during the first rut then they cycle through 28 days. Mature does do this after the first one. Doe fawns enter into estrus when they achieve the weight requirement to get sexually mature. Bucks try to find these do near food sources. Bucks keep following these do wherever they go. It increases the chances for a successful hunt when you make the appropriate call during this time. Some suggestion and tips that you can follow are,
• The calls that you are going to make for deer will have no use if it will not match with their sounds.
• Conditions will play an important role if you are doing deer calling in the late season. There will be snow on the ground, the low temperature that makes it harder to hunt and attract perform deer calling. This is because putting the wrong foot on the ground will create a sound that can push bucks away.
• Climb a tree if the deer spot you or else it will run away. Make sure to keep yourself safe and not fall from the tree.
• Never make the calls when the deer is close to you. It can find and spot you. However, you can still make the call if it is not looking in your direction. If you don’t find any deer then make a call then that is known as a blind call which can bring deer closer to you.
• Start the call by bleat can and flip it for emulating the sound of a doe. If a buck is near your location then use doe bleat to attract it. In case you are hunting does, using fawn bleat to replicate the young’s sound will surely help.
• Repeating bleats and grunts for every 20-30 minutes is the best way to attract deer.
• If the buck is 600ft away then make snort wheeze. This way, you can easily gain their attention and bring the bucks.
• Keep the intensity of the grunts high for catching male deer’s attention. It will start to move into your direction.
• If all other calls are failing then a rattle bag will attract them. Take 40-45 minutes intervals.
• In the post-rut season, deer are less receptive when loud grunts are produced. Hunters can use the same technique that they use in the peak season. To do this, blow into the grunt tube softly.
Deer are quite smart when it comes to run away from the hunters. Their hearing capability is high. However, you can deceive them by using the correct equipment and making the right call that we have already mentioned early in this article. Deer call is not the only way to hunt them but it is an effective method to bring closer around you. This way, you can aim at their right body part and make the hunting successful.
