First things first. Before you get on an instinctive shooting practice, you need to ensure that your shooting equipment is well maintained and in good shape. With a compound bow, you need to make sure that the strings are not worn out or in bad shape. You can either use a compound bow that you have used before or seek professional assistance on the best compound bow to practice with.
You need to get the arrow length, spine and point weights consistent when practicing. These can however be adjusted once you get the hang of it. Getting your equipment in good shape will provide you with a flawless practice session without any drawbacks.
Stance And Grip
Before anything else, your shooting stance will make or break your shooting practice sessions as it is what determines the trajectory of the arrow. Each and every archer has his/her own stance that they feel comfortable with when shooting.
However, since time immemorial a perfect shooting stance is one where the feet are in alignment with the width of the shoulders and the left or non dominant foot forward. Your non dominant hand should also be the one holding the bow while the dominant hand holds the arrow directed by the pointer finger in the non dominant hand. Your wrist and your arm should also be in alignment. Some modern bows are designed in such a way that the hand is automatically aligned in this position.
Find Your Anchor Point
Your anchor point is simply the point at which your draw hand and the bow string are at when your bow is at a maximum draw. Different archers will have different anchor points. Customarily, most archers’ anchor points are at their chins or the corner of their mouths. What an anchor point does is that it will balance your aim and set the trajectory of the arrow once you release.
When practicing for instinctive shooting with a compound bow, you have to make your anchor point as consistent as possible so that your arrow hits the target all the time. A compound bow gives you the advantage of setting a constant anchor point because you don’t necessarily use your energy to draw the string. Once the anchor point is determined, it becomes easy to shoot instinctively at any target.
Once you have established your anchor point, use your bow hand to aim at the target while focusing on a specific point on the target. Whatever you do, do not put your focus on the arrow.
Only focus on your target point when aiming. Looking at the arrow will only distract your focus from the target. Since this is instinctive shooting, your aiming is entirely natural as there are no sights to help you aim. If your compound bow has a sight, try not to use it and just aim naturally.
After establishing your anchor point and setting an aim you can now release your arrow. At this point you have drawn your compound bow up to the anchor point and it is ready to release. Once your finger reaches the anchor point, relax your hand and release the string to let the arrow free.
Once you have released the arrow, do not lower your hand just yet, wait for the arrow to hit the target and use the position of your hand as a point of reference for your next shooting. If the arrow hits the target, then you will know that is the right aiming position, if not, then you can adjust accordingly.

Gap shooting is an approach in an instinctive shooting that requires you to line the arrowhead towards the target and determine the shooting range from the point of shooting to the target. The point at which you have to stand in order to hit your target is called the point on’ in gap shooting. Different bows will have different points on distances and it is up to you to determine the best point on the distance of your bow.
You can do this by inching closer and closer to your target as you shoot until you find the perfect point on distance. Your point on distance will depend entirely on your compound bow’s yardage. Although some bows have adjustable yardage, it is recommended that you start with constant yardage first and perfect it until you can move to the next distance. Learners often start with a point on the distance of 30 yards and move upwards as they perfect their archery.
See, Aim And Shoot
Because instinctive shooting will not involve the use of any aids or points of reference, you will have to practice to aim and shoot at your target without them. To practice instinctive shooting, set your target at a distance of say, 5 yards and just start shooting.
While shooting, focus on a specific point on the target, not the whole target as in sight shooting. The point of this is to make you familiar with your shooting range. Once you master your shooting range then you can focus on the target as a whole. Do this until it takes you the shortest possible time to load your bow and shoot.
